PMLD Music Therapy Essex

Music therapy for children and adults with Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities

For people with PMLD, communication can happen in many different ways. A smile, vocal sound, movement, eye gaze or change in attention can all be meaningful.

Music therapy provides a space to notice, respond to and build on these small moments of communication.

As a music therapist for PMLD, I use singing, instruments, rhythm, improvisation and Makaton signing to create meaningful opportunities for connection, communication and choice.

How can music therapy help with PMLD?

Music doesn't rely on spoken language, making it a valuable way to connect with people who may have complex communication needs. Sessions can support:

  • Communication and self-expression
  • Choice and independence
  • Turn-taking and interaction
  • Shared attention
  • Sensory exploration
  • Engagement and enjoyment

Sessions are completely individualised. I follow the person's responses and interests, adapting the music to their needs rather than expecting them to fit into a set activity.

What happens in a PMLD music therapy session?

Sessions may include familiar songs, instruments, musical games, improvisation, movement and Makaton signing.

There is no need to speak, sing or have any musical experience.

Sometimes a successful session might be a musical conversation made up of just a few sounds, movements or moments of shared attention.

Frequently asked questions

What is PMLD?

Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities (PMLD) describes people with a profound learning disability alongside other complex needs, which may include physical or sensory disabilities.

Can music therapy help someone who doesn't speak?

Yes. Music therapy can provide opportunities for communication without relying on speech. Vocalisations, movements, facial expressions, eye gaze and other responses can all become part of a musical interaction.

Does someone need to be musical?

No. There is no musical experience required. Sessions are adapted to the individual's abilities, interests and communication style.

Can Makaton be used during music therapy?

Yes. As a licensed Makaton Tutor, I can incorporate Makaton signing into songs and musical activities where appropriate.

Where does PMLD music therapy take place?

Sessions can take place in homes, schools, residential settings and care centres across Essex, depending on individual circumstances.
